“Don’t mock the afflicted,” my mother used to say. Nevertheless, some people just seem to invite it…
The UKCP was meant to be the umbrella organization for all psychotherapists in the UK, but it never amounted to much. Now the two organizations principally representing CBT therapists, the BABCP and the AREBT, have withdrawn from the UKCP and set up their own joint national register of therapists.
A few therapists are members of both the UKCP and at least one of the other bodies — 248 therapists, in the case of the BABCP. So the UKCP wrote to them with an assurance that their membership could continue.
To achieve this, the UKCP plans to set up a new rival organisation in competition with the BABCP/AREBT. Details have not yet been made known.
Now the BABCP has written to the 248 members offering them money if they resign from the UKCP. Superb!
Look out for the new classification, Organizational Childishness Disorder, in the long-awaited DSM-V.
